We added a full second story to this classic Queen Anne home; our challenge was to maintain the charm, scale and character of the original house, located in an upscale neighborhood of traditional homes. The interior, however, has been dramatically opened up and transformed into a serene and contemporary urban oasis, replete with artisan-crafted glass, concrete finishes and a floating staircase, yet all respectful of the traditional bones.
This house is a great example of “Transitional” style. Notice how the exterior is a traditional/cottage style home; inside we combined traditional details with very contemporary touches. For example, window and door trims are classic, but cabinets, stair rails etc are clean and spare. And of course the floor plan is much more open, which you would never see in a truly traditional style home of this era. This melding of old and new breathes new life into an old home, and greatly increases its functionality for today’s lifestyle.
