A Family Retreat on San Juan Island
| Two families with a total child count of five boys and one girl plan
to share this getaway, often at the same time, as a big family compound.
The intention of the design is to provide a cluster of structures which
allows for different activities and levels of privacy. There is a central
building where the kitchen, dining and living area become the gathering
place; off of this is a quieter wing which harbors bedrooms for the two
couples and the single daughter, as well as small retreat areas. The third
structure, a bunk house and playroom for the gang of young boy cousins,
is physically separate from the other two. The breaking up of the mass
of an otherwise very large house into a compound of smaller structures
allows the architecture to be more integrated with a gentle water's-edge
landscape of tall well spaced alders and fir trees. (Julie designed this
project while formerly employed at Hoshide Williams Architects.) |
