| A tiny old cabin was the start of this project. It is located in an
historic collection of dwellings on Decatur Island in the San Juans. A
local covenant governs any new construction so as to maintain the character
of the community: style, massing, color, window style etc.
In adding a sizeable addition to "Margarets Cabin", we wanted to be
sensitive to respect the original structure yet create a unified entity
that meshed old with new in a sensible manner. The finished home now has
a large eat-in kitchen in the old cabin connecting to a living area in
the new; with three bedrooms upstairs in the addition connecting to a loft
over the kitchen. The interior character is rustic and spare - befitting
the carefree island summer home that it is. |
